A total of 2,361 NCC cadets from across the country are taking part in a month-long Republic Day camp which began at Delhi Cantonment on Monday. The annual event will also witness participation of 917 girl cadets, the largest so far. Out of 2,361 NCC cadets, 114 are from Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh and 178 from the Northeast region. In addition, cadets and officers from 14 friendly foreign countries will also be participating in the camp as part of a Youth Exchange Programme, the Defence Ministry said in a statement. "The NCC Republic Day Camp-2025 commenced at the Cariappa Parade Ground, Delhi Cantonment, with 'Sarva Dharm Pooja' today," it said. As many as 60 NCC cadets were hospitalised following a suspected case of food poisoning at a camp held at a college in Kerala, creating an anxious situation, officials said. The case of food poisoning was reported at the camp organised at a college in Thrikkakara, by the 21 Kerala Battalion NCC on Monday evening, they added. The students who complained of food poisoning were taken to various hospitals. Many of them were discharged last night, they said. The NCC has ordered a department-level inquiry into the incident, an official source told PTI. Officials said four students initially complained of discomfort at around 7 pm after having their dinner, and the number grew to 40, then later to 60. All of them were taken to hospitals by the camp organisers. Many students left with their parents, who arrived at the camp following the incident. Major General Jagdeep Singh Cheema has assumed charge as the 13th Additional Director General (ADG) of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Directorate Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh (PHHP&C), said an official statement here on Saturday. Bringing with his 36 years of distinguished service as the new commander, Major General Cheema will oversee the NCC Directorate PHHP&C, which comprises eight group headquarters located in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Chandigarh, it said. The directorate covers 56 districts, imparting training to approximately 1.5 lakh cadets in 2,000 colleges and schools, focusing on overall youth development and molding future leaders, the statement said. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin has ordered constituting a Special Investigation Team to probe the incidents relating to the alleged sexual abuse of minor girls at a fake NCC camp in Krishnagiri district recently, the state government said on Wednesday. Senior IPS officer K Bhavaneeswari will lead the Special Investigation Team (SIT), which has been tasked by the CM to expedite the probe into the matter within 15 days and file charge-sheet within 60 days. According to an official release here, Stalin also directed setting up of a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) to recommend ways to prevent recurrence of such incidents. The MDT will be led by Social Welfare Department Secretary Jayashree Muralidharan and will have, among others, representatives from the police and the school education departments.
