The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has chargesheeted a key accused involved in the supply of illegal arms and ammunition to Manipur and other states across the country, according to an official statement issued on Friday. The chargesheet was filed against Solomona alias Hminga alias Lalmithanga, a resident of Mizoram, before the NIA special court here on Thursday, it said. The NIA filed a case against Lalngaihawma, Lalmuanawma and others on December 26 last year, based on inputs that some Mizoram-based entities were part of a syndicate involved in trafficking of arms, ammunition, explosive etc., in the northeastern region of the country, said the statement issued by the probe agency. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday carried out searches at the premises of two persons in Gaya, including former member of Bihar Legislative Council, as part of its probe into their alleged links with the banned CPI(Maoist), sources said. NIA sleuths conducted searches at the premises of former MLC Manorma Devi in Rampur area and businessman Dwarika Yadav in Gointha village, they added. Sources said the searches are part of NIA's probe into alleged conspiracy by the Maoists to revive and strengthen the organisation in the state's Magadh area. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has conducted searches at locations across seven states to probe the case of classified defence information leakage through a Pakistani espionage racket, according to an official statement issued on Thursday. The premises searched on Wednesday by NIA teams were linked with suspects who had received money from Pakistan to undertake spying activities in India, it said. "Extensive searches were conducted at 16 locations in Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Haryana in the case related to leakage of classified defence information through a Pakistani ISI espionage racket," the NIA statement said. Sheikh Abdul Rashid, popularly known as Engineer Rashid, was arrested in a 2017 Jammu and Kashmir terror funding case. The legal principle 'Bail is rule, jail is an exception' is applicable to offences even under special statutes like the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ruled while granting bail to a man accused under the stringent anti-terror law. A bench of justices Abhay S Oka and Augustine George Masih said if courts start denying bail in deserving cases, it will be a violation of fundamental rights. "Allegations of the prosecution may be very serious, but it is court's duty to consider the case for bail in accordance with law. Bail is the rule and jail is the exception applies even to special statutes. If courts start denying bail in deserving cases, it will be a violation of rights guaranteed under Article 21," the bench said while pronouncing its judgement. Baljeet Singh alias Rana Bhai alias Balli, hailing from Barwani district of Madhya Pradesh, was arrested on Thursday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) said in the statement. Balli was found to be a major weapons supplier to Landa's agents in Punjab, it said. The weapons were used to carry out large-scale terror activities, including extortions from businessmen and others, it said. The Supreme Court on Monday refused to grant interim bail to activist Jyoti Jagtap, who is in jail in connection with the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case. A bench comprising justices MM Sundresh and Aravind Kumar also adjourned the hearing on the main bail plea of the activist. "We are not inclined to give interim bail", Justice Subdresh said. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday filed charge sheet against seven persons for recruiting and radicalising vulnerable youths as "mujahideens" to operate as terrorist sleeper cells, an official statement said. They were part of a bigger conspiracy by proscribed terrorist organisation Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) to prepare 50 such sleeper cells in each district of India by 2025, it said. The sleeper cells were being prepared to carry out guerrilla attacks on Indian soldiers, police personnel and leaders of specific religious organisations, the statement issued by the NIA said. The accused were also involved in the fabrication of explosives for furtherance of the ISIS goal to establish the Caliphate system in India by waging jihad against the government of India, it said.
