Union Minister Kamlesh Paswan on Thursday said that the Centre has made a three-fold increase in the budget for the northeastern states to help the region catch up with the development in other parts of the country. Paswan, the minister of state for rural development, participated in the Solung festival at Ruksin in East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh and said the central government is committed to fast-track development projects in the northeastern states. "Visible changes are taking place in areas of power, education, healthcare, agriculture, tourism, road and air connectivity, infrastructure, etc. We must make efforts to take central and state-sponsored schemes to poor people and deliver services to them, Paswan said. The minister also said Arunachal Pradesh is a special place for him and joining the festival has allowed him to experience the rich culture and traditions of the Adi community. Shots were fired and an abandoned house was torched in Manipur's Jiribam, triggering fresh tensions within a day of the Meitei and Hmar communities reaching an agreement to make efforts to restore normalcy in the district, officials said on Saturday. An abandoned house in Lalpani village was torched by armed men on Friday night, they said. "It is an isolated settlement consisting of few Meitei houses, and most of those were abandoned after violence broke out in the district. Miscreants, who are yet to be identified, took advantage of security lapses in the area to commit the arson," an official said. The armed men also fired several rounds of shells and gunshots, targetting the village, he said. Security forces were rushed to the area following the incident, he added. Representatives of the Meitei and Hmar communities reached an agreement in a meeting held at a CRPF facility in adjoining Assam's Cachar on Thursday. The Centre is committed to the development of the Northeast and making it at par with the rest of the country, Union Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Virendra Kumar said. Addressing senior officers of the Arunachal Pradesh government on Saturday, Kumar spoke about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of equitable development throughout the country. The villages in the country are changing with the implementation of schemes such as the PM Awas, Ujjwala and Jal Jeevan Mission, he said. "The government is trying to look after all aspects of a person's life, with an effort to bring all under the ambit of various schemes," he added. The minister reviewed the status of centrally-sponsored schemes being implemented in the Lower Dibang Valley district of the state. "Our children will inherit the country we have shaped, so it is our duty to bring about development at the right time and pace," he told the officers.
