Electric two-wheeler manufacturer Okinawa Autotech on Wednesday said it will invest 25 million euros (over Rs 220 crore) in the next three years on the development of new products and powertrain. The company said the development will take place at its newly inaugurated first research and development centre in Italy, set up in association with its joint venture partner Tacita. "The first product designed at the global centre will be an electric cruiser motorcycle that is scheduled to be unveiled in the coming months in India," Okinawa Autotech said in a statement. A total investment of 25 million euros over the next three years has been planned for developing new products and powertrain, it added. "Setting up the global R&D centre showcases our ambition to bring the best technologies from the entire world to our Indian customers. Concerned over cases of fire incidents observed in electric two-wheelers, the road transport ministry has introduced additional safety provisions in the battery safety standards which will come into effect from October 1, according to an official release. The amendments include additional safety requirements related to battery cells, on-board charger, design of battery pack, and thermal propagation due to internal cell short circuit leading to fire. The notification to mandate amended standards for the respective categories of electric vehicles with effect from October 1, 2022, is in progress, the release said. Electric two-wheeler maker Okinawa Autotech on Wednesday said it will invest Rs 500 crore to set up a new manufacturing plant at Karoli in Rajasthan. Spread across 30 acres of land, the factory will have an annual production capacity of 10 lakh units and will be fully operational from October 2023, Okinawa Autotech said in a statement. The plant will employ more than 5,000 people. This will be the third plant of the company apart from the two manufacturing facilities at Alwar in Rajasthan, it added. "As the market leader in the electric two-wheeler segment, we are committed to addressing the most significant issues faced by the sector.
