Omar Abdullah

Currently the Leader of the Opposition in the J&K Legislative Assembly since 2015, Omar Abdullah was the chief minister of Jammu & Kashmir from 5 January 2009 to 8 January 2015. Previously, he had been Minister of State for External Affairs at the Centre from 23 July 2001 to 23 December 2002. A member of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, Abdullah represents the Beerwah constituency in the state’s Assembly. He had been elected to the Lok Sabha in 1998 from the Srinagar constituency.   For the Lok Sabha elections 2019, Omar Abdullah has said that his party, National Conference, will not form an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party. He has also been strongly pitching for a single-party government in J&K. Criticising the PDP-BJP alliance in his state, he had earlier said the 2019 elections would be about the government that would defend Article 35(a) and Article 370 in J&K. On the election manifesto, he said his party would be reaching out to the youth and address their sentiment.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Tuesday that the government will develop pilgrim tourism circuits in Jammu to encourage pilgrims visiting the Mata Vaishnodevi shrine to tour various other tourist destinations in the region. Noting that one crore pilgrims visit the Vaishnodevi shrine annually, Abdullah said if the government could divert 10 to 15 percent of these pilgrims to various destinations in the region, it would benefit the people. "As for the pilgrim tourism circuit in Jammu, we will create three, four and seven day packages. Govt, people need to work together against water crisis in state: J&K CM

Jammu and Kashmir is staring at a water crisis this year due to a massive deficit in rainfall, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said on Wednesday, calling for a more proactive approach and collective efforts towards water management and conservation. J-K Assembly's first budget session in 6 years to begin on March 3

J&K mysterious deaths: Rajouri's Badhaal village declared containment zone

The remote Badhaal village in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district was on Wednesday declared a containment zone and prohibitory orders imposed on all public and private gatherings in the wake of the death of 17 people belonging to three families, officials said. Another person belonging to the village has been admitted to a hospital in a critical condition, they said. The containment orders have been imposed under section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
