The National Testing Agency (NTA) announced the much-awaited results of the UGC National Eligibility Test on Thursday, with 1,12,070 candidates qualifying for PhD admission.Additionally, 53,694 candidates have cleared the exam for the post of Assistant Professor, while 4,970 have secured eligibility for the prestigious Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).This year's UGC-NET saw 11,21,225 candidates register for the exam, out of which 6,84,224 appeared.The re-test was conducted over 11 days, from August 21 to September 5, 2024, across 280 cities in India.The exam covered 83 subjects and was held in 21 shifts using Computer Based Test (CBT) mode.Along with the results, NTA has also released the subject/category-wise cut-off list for UGC NET Result 2024.The UGC NET is conducted to determine the eligibility for 'Assistant Professor' as well as 'Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) & Assistant Professor' positions. Students with four-year undergraduate degrees can now directly appear for NET and pursue PhD, according to University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Jagadesh Kumar. To pursue a PhD with or without a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF), the candidates will require a minimum of 75 per cent marks or equivalent grades in their four-year undergraduate course. So far, a candidate for the National Eligibility Test (NET) needed a master's degree with a minimum of 55 per cent marks. "The candidates with four-year undergraduate degrees can now directly pursue PhD and appear for NET. Such candidates are allowed to appear in a subject in which they want to pursue a PhD irrespective of the discipline in which they have obtained the four-year bachelor's degree," Kumar told PTI. "The candidates having passed a four-year or eight-semester bachelor's degree programme should have a minimum of 75 pc marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade on a point scale wherever the grading system is followed," t
The National Eligibility Test (NET) scores will be used for PhD admissions from 2024-25 eliminating the need for separate entrance tests conducted by universities and higher education institutions, according to the University Grants Commission. The NET is conducted twice a year -- June and December. Its scores are currently used to award Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and as eligibility for appointment as an assistant professor for those with a Master's degree. According to University Grants Commission (UGC) officials, the commission had constituted an expert committee to review the provisions of the exam and based on the panel's recommendations, it has decided that from the academic session 2024-25, the score can be used for admission to PhD programmes. Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh on Tuesday unveiled a portal where students would get information and be able to apply for doctoral and post-doctoral fellowships of various departments of the government. Singh said the common fellowship portal (fellowships.gov.in) will save the energy and time of aspiring students and startups by enabling a simplified and streamlined process from the submission of applications. The applicants can create their profile on the portal and use the same information to auto-fill different applications, the minister said. "This portal will help all applicants by reducing their time and energy by getting full information and submission of applications at a single place by the click of a mouse," Singh said. The minister said departments under the Ministry of Science and Technology (Department of Science and Technology, Department of Biotechnology, Council Of Scientific and Industrial Research) have come together for submission of application .
