The Telecom Sector Skill Council (TSSC) is planning to train and place over 1.5 lakh candidates in telecom and related emerging technologies in the next financial year to reduce the demand-supply workforce gap. The increasing convergence of telecom with the technology sector and especially the launch of 5G has resulted in a higher demand for skilled/unskilled/reskilled workforce in the industry. "As we witness this increasing demand in the telecom workforce, TSSC aims to empower the youth in tier II, III cities and rural areas with digital and core telecom and tech skills. In the next fiscal year, we plan to train and place over 1.5 lakh candidates in telecom and related emerging technologies," TSSC CEO Arvind Bali said on Thursday. About 1.1 crore persons have been trained and 21.4 lakh placed under the second phase of the government's flagship skilling scheme PMKVY, said the Economic Survey 2022-23 tabled in Parliament on Tuesday. With an aim to make India a skill capital of the world and improve mobility of skilled manpower, the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) International has been set up, which aims to create a network of institutions across India, said the survey. This network of institutions will be called the Skill India International (SII) Network. It shall be created through the empanelment of state-of-the-art government and private institutions, it added. "Between FY17 and FY23 (as of 5 January 2023), under PMKVY 2.0 about 1.1 crore persons have trained: 83 per cent certified and about 21.4 lakh placed. Under PMKVY 3.0, during FY21 to FY23 (as on 5 January 2023) 7.4 lakh persons have been trained, 66 per cent certified and 41,437 placed," the Survey stated. The Survey also highlighted

The committee is particularly concerned about the third edition of the scheme, as placement figures fall below 10%

In its first iteration, the government was able to enrol two million candidates, but it could certify 1.5 million and place only 0.3 million

PMKVY 3.0 has had the worst track record, with only 3.6 per cent placement under the scheme

The government launched the PMKVY scheme in 2015 and revamped it in 2016 to impart skills to one crore persons by 2020

Till the said period, 681 PMKKs have been established in the country as against the allocated 812 PMKKs across 707 districts, he said.

Students certified under the PMKVY will be tracked by state departments even after they pass out till they get jobs

A Rs 12,000-crore outlay for Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) to impart skills to 10 million over the next four years (2016-20) got Cabinet approval on Wednesday. PMKVY will impart fresh training to six million youth and certify four million, who have acquired skills non-formally under the Recognition of Prior Learning.
