Thirty-five people were killed and 43 others injured when a car rammed into a crowd in China's Zhuhai City on Monday, official media reported on Tuesday. Zhuhai is currently hosting China's prestigious airshow. While the details of the incident have not yet been released, the state-run Xinhua news agency said that 35 people were killed and 43 others injured after a car rammed into people. A 62-year-old driver has been detained, police said. It was not immediately clear whether it was an accident or an attack. President Xi Jinping has urged all-out efforts to treat the people injured in the car-ramming case in Zhuhai City. Xi also demanded punishment for the perpetrator in accordance with the law, the Xinhua report said.
In a relief for commercial vehicle drivers, the Supreme Court on Wednesday held that a person holding a driving licence for a light motor vehicle (LMV) is also entitled to drive a transport vehicle with an unladen weight not exceeding 7,500 kg. Pedestrians continue to be the most vulnerable in road crashes in Delhi, accounting for 43 per cent of the victims, followed by two-wheelers, according to Delhi Road Crash Fatalities Report 2023. The number of deaths in road crashes decreased by 0.55 per cent from 1,264 in 2022 to 1,257 in 2023 in spite of an increase in the number of vehicles registered on road. There has also been an increase in the number of prosecutions from 4,38,052 in 2022 to 6,39,097 in 2023, along with other corrective measures taken by the traffic unit, police said. The report released on Wednesday by Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora contains an analysis of the accidents that occurred last year along with the causes, patterns and suggestions in road design, regulation and prosecution. The report will help the police outline a road safety action plan which will involve the joint efforts of multiple departments to improve education, engineering, enforcement, and emergency care. Three people were killed and 24 sustained injuries after a bus fell into a drain while trying to avoid hitting a cyclist here on Friday evening, police said. The bus, which had 53 people on board, was on its way to Siddharthnagar from Balrampur. They said The incident occurred in the Dhebaruwa area of Siddharthnagar district. According to Superintendent of Police Prachi Singh, the driver lost control of the bus while trying to save a cyclist. However, the bus hit the cycle before falling into the drain near Chargahwa, police said. Two passengers, including a teenager, and the cyclist died in the accident, she said. Information regarding the accident was received at around 6 pm. The local police, with the help of locals, rescued the passengers trapped in the bus. Six people died and nearly 20 were injured in a collision between a bus and a truck in Maihar district of Madhya Pradesh, police said. They said the bus was headed for Nagpur from Prayagraj when it collided with the parked stone-laden dumper truck around 11 pm on Saturday near the Nadan Dehat police station, about 25 kilometres from the district headquarters. Superintendent of Police, Maihar, Sudhir Agrawal told PTI that among those injured, the condition of six people was stated to be serious and they were referred to Satna. He said the rest are undergoing treatment in Maihar and Amarpatan hospitals. The Uttar Pradesh government is planning to equip stray cattle with fluorescent strips particularly at night to mitigate the risk of road accidents. The initiative aims to enhance the visibility of stray cattle to drivers thereby preventing collisions and safeguarding both human and animal lives, officials said. According to the officials, the fluorescent strips would be positioned on the horns and necks of stray cattle. These highly reflective strips would be illuminated by vehicle headlights, making the animals easily visible in low-light conditions, thus reducing the number of accidents caused by unexpected encounters with these animals on roads. Animal Husbandry Department Director P N Singh revealed that the plan is nearing its final stages and is expected to receive approval soon. Two more children died in Hathras bus accident while undergoing treatment at a hospital, taking the death toll to 17, officials said on Saturday. Eight people were killed and 10 others injured after a truck hit a stationary vehicle carrying devotees in Haryana's Jind district, police said on Tuesday. The accident occurred past midnight in Bidharana village on the Hisar-Chandigarh national highway when the devotees were travelling from Kurukshetra district to a temple at Gogamedi in Rajasthan. The truck, bearing a Rajasthan registration number, was loaded with wooden logs when it hit the stationary vehicle. The World Health Organization on Monday called on countries in the WHO South-East Asia Region to accelerate measures to reduce road traffic deaths, a leading cause of mortality among young people aged 15-29. "Vulnerable road users, including pedestrians, bicyclists and two or three-wheelers constitute 66 per cent of all reported road traffic deaths in our region," said Saima Wazed, Regional Director, WHO South-East Asia, in her address at the 15th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion (Safety 2024) which began here today. She emphasised that the roads and their networks need to be designed prioritising those most at risk -- children and adolescents, people with disabilities, pedestrians and other vulnerable groups. A man died after he was allegedly mowed down by a speeding Mercedes car here in southeast Delhi, police said on Sunday. The driver of the car was arrested later, they said. According to the victim's family members, the car allegedly hit his cycle from behind and it was dragged on the road for several metres. The 35-year-old victim died on spot after the accident Saturday morning while the driver of the car, Pradeep Gautam (45) from Noida, fled from the scene with his vehicle, police said. Despite a ban on people walking on the Yamuna Expressway, there has been a rise in pedestrian deaths in road crashes on the route over the years, with 41 per cent of the fatalities taking place in 2023 alone, according to data procured through RTI Act. Altogether 39 pedestrians lost their lives along the 165-km Yamuna Expressway since 2012, when it was opened for commuters. Of these, 16 fatalities were recorded in 2023 --? the highest any year, the date showed. Mumbai Police have issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against a 24-year-old man, who was allegedly driving a BMW car which fatally knocked down a woman in Worli area, an official said on Monday. The accused is the son of a Shiv Sena leader from neighbouring Palghar district. A woman died after the two-wheeler on which she was travelling with her husband was hit by a BMW car in Mumbai's Worli area in the early hours of Sunday, a police official said. The woman, identified as Kaveri Nakhwa (45), was travelling with her husband Pradip on the arterial Annie Besant Road when the luxury car driver lost control at around 5:30am, the Worli police station official said. "Kaveri Nakhwa fell on the road. Passersby alerted police about the incident. She was rushed to civic-run Nair Hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
