Batting great Sachin Tendulkar on Tuesday described his celebrated childhood coach Ramakant Achrekar as an "all-rounder" and a one-stop shop who was way ahead of his time when it came to teaching cricket as his coaching went beyond the field. Tendulkar was speaking after unveiling the legendary coach Achrekar's memorial at the iconic Shivaji Park here. Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray was also present on the occasion. Recalling his days when he was under the tutelage of Achrekar, Tendulkar said players trained by him were never tensed during matches thanks to their solid temperament developed by the great coach. "Ajit (Tendulkar's elder brother) used to play, and in matches, his observation was, who were not sir's students, they were tensed. He used to wonder sir's students were never under pressure. "Then he realised, sir had a lot of practice matches, and that temperament had been built. I was no exception," Tendulkar spoke in Marathi. "Cricket was always go

Former England captain Alastair Cook feels Joe Root has the potential to surpass the legendary Sachin Tendulkar as the leading run-getter in Test cricket thanks to his insatiable hunger and incredible talent. The 33-year-old Root currently has 12716 Test runs and is 3205 short of the Indian icon (15921). Root occupies the fifth spot in the leading run-getter's chart at the moment with Rahul Dravid (13,288), Jacques Kallis (13,289) and Ricky Ponting (13,378) and Tendulkar ahead of him. "I think Joe Root could set a mark, certainly on an English side, that'll be very hard to beat. But, you just never know," Cook was quoted as saying by the ICC. "I hope he can get very close, if not be the first person who scores 16,000 Test runs. It'd be a great achievement." Root overtook Cook as England's leading run-scorer in the longest format during the Multan Test against Pakistan earlier this month. Having watched his compatriot go past him to become England's most decorated batter, the ...

England fast bowling great James Anderson, who is into his final few days as an international cricketer, enjoyed his battles against Sachin Tendulkar the most over the course of his remarkably long career. Anderson, who is playing his 188th Test for England against the West Indies at Lord's, will retire after the game. Even though Anderson dismissed Tendulkar on nine occasions, he could not have a set plan against the Indian master blaster. The best batter I would have to say is Sachin Tendulkar, Anderson told Sky Sports when asked about the toughest batter he bowled to. I don't remember having a specific game plan against Sachin Tendulkar. Once he came on, I would just think that I cannot bowl a bad ball here, he was that kind of player. He was a key for India as well. If you get him out in India, the whole atmosphere, in the ground changes. He was such a big wicket, Anderson said. Like Tendulkar, who represented India for 24 years, Anderson has set a telling example for fast ..

Batting icon Sachin Tendulkar has picked the legendary Roger Federer as one tennis player he would have loved to bat with given the latter's "cricket connection" and interest in the sport. A regular at the Wimbledon over the years, Tendulkar met Federer when he visited the center court in London to watch some tennis action on Saturday. "One tennis player I would love to bat with has to be Roger because also he's got cricketing connections," Tendulkar told Star Sports on the sidelines of Wimbledon. "His mother is from South Africa and he follows cricket and when we sat together and chatted we discussed a lot of cricket not just tennis so it has to be Roger." The 51-year-old from Mumbai also said he loved playing tennis with the late Australian spin great Shane Warne and former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh and described them as cricketers who would make best doubles partners.
