Tata Motors on Friday said it has commenced production at its new production facility at Sanand in Gujarat. Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd, a unit of Tata Motors, had acquired the facility from Ford India for Rs 725.7 crore in January last year. "We have successfully retooled the factory in the shortest span of 12 months, taking it to a new level to accommodate a wide range of existing products and future new models to come," Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM) MD Shailesh Chandra said in a statement. The facility will play a pivotal role in steering Tata Motors, especially TPEM, towards achieving newer feats, he added. "With existing capacities near saturation, this new facility will unlock an additional manufacturing capacity of 3 lakh units per annum which is scalable to 4.2 lakh units per annum," Chandra said. Global memory and data storage major Micron Technology on Thursday said the first phase of its plant in Gujarat's Sanand will become operational in early 2025. It has already started construction of the plant by roping Tata Projects, and the hiring process has also begun, the US-based company's president and chief executive Sanjay Mehrotra said at the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit here. "The first phase, which will include 5,00,000 square feet of plant clean room space, will become operational in early 2025," he said. The investment was first announced during the US visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2023 and construction had begun in September. Chip maker Micron Technology's decision to set up a $2.75-billion plant at Sanand near Ahmedabad indicates that Gujarat's dedicated semiconductor policy is bearing fruit and attracting global players, the state government has said. Gujarat had in July last year announced a dedicated policy to draw new investments in the semiconductor sector by offering incentives and subsidies to start operations in the state. The Gujarat Semiconductor Policy', unveiled by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, will remain in force till 2027. The policy has been designed in line with the Centre's India Semiconductor Mission' to attract and facilitate new projects in the sector, the government said in a release. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday dedicated to the nation the 77-km New Bhandu-New Sanand section of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor that will help speed up the transport of goods from ports and manufacturing hubs in the region. The US health regulator has pulled up Intas Pharmaceuticals for manufacturing lapses, including failure of its quality control unit to ensure CGMP compliance, at its Sanand-based manufacturing plant. In a warning letter dated July 28, 2023, the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) pointed out various manufacturing lapses at the plant. "This warning letter summarises significant violations of current good manufacturing practice (CGMP) regulations for finished pharmaceuticals," the USFDA said. It further said: "Because your methods, facilities, or controls for manufacturing, processing, packing, or holding do not conform to CGMP, your drug products are adulterated.." The USFDA inspected the manufacturing facility from November 22 to December 2, 2022. Tata Motors on Tuesday said the acquisition of Ford India's manufacturing plant at Sanand through its subsidiary has been completed. In August last year, the company had announced that its arm Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd (TPEML) would acquire Ford India Pvt Ltd's (FIPL) Sanand plant, Gujarat for Rs 725.7 crore. With the fulfilment of the necessary conditions, including receipt of relevant regulatory approvals, the parties have completed the transaction and TPEML has acquired the Sanand property and the vehicle manufacturing plant and machinery, Tata Motors said in a regulatory filing.
