Union Home Minister Amit Shah will attend the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Frontier Headquarters' Raising Day celebrations and hold high-level meetings with officials in West Bengal's Siliguri on Friday. Shah arrived in the state on Thursday night, and Union Minister and West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar received him at the Bagdogra Airport in the northern part of the state. The Union home minister's schedule for Friday begins with his participation in the Raising Day celebrations at the SSB Frontier Headquarters' parade ground in Siliguri at 11 AM, officials said. Authorities in Bengal Safari Park in Siliguri have launched a probe into the death of three tiger cubs after their mother accidentally bit them on their necks while shifting them together from one part of the enclosure to another, an official said. The cubs, born to tigress 'Rika' at the open-air zoo in Siliguri last week, died after their trachea was punctured as the big cat was trying to take her children inside the night shelter enclosure on Thursday. Senior West Bengal Zoo Authority member Sourav Choudhury told PTI "Rika accidentally killed the three cubs as she was taking them away from the night shelter to another part of the enclosure." "However, we have launched a probe to ascertain the circumstances," he said. The probe team consists of senior forest, zoo officials and one vet. The National Green Tribunal has sought replies from the Union environment ministry's offices in West Bengal and Sikkim on the alleged illegal dumping of medical and hazardous waste in a vacant plot in West Bengal's Siliguri. The green body was hearing a matter where it had taken suo motu (on its own) cognisance of a newspaper report regarding the unauthorised dumping in the Farabari area of the town, allegedly from the neighbouring state of Sikkim. An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 struck 140 kilometres southwest of Siliguri in the wee hours of Wednesday, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) informed in a tweet.The NCS said the earthquake occurred at 5:35 am IST on Wednesday. According to National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres.The official media handle of the National Centre for Seismology took to Twitter and said "Earthquake of Magnitude:4.3, Occurred on 12-04-2023, 05:35:10 IST, Lat: 25.98 & Long: 87.26, Depth: 10 Km, Location: 140 km SW of Siliguri, West Bengal".Earlier on April 9 earthquake of magnitude 5.3 on the Ritcher scale occurred at a depth of 10 km, Nicobar Island on Sunday, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).The earthquake occurred at around 4:01 pm.
Two persons were arrested in West Bengal's Siliguri with gold biscuits worth Rs 2.42 crore, officials said on Tuesday. Acting on a tip-off, officers of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested Tlangmuanthanga and Dalsuankhai from the Siliguri Junction area on Monday, they said. Twenty-nine gold biscuits, weighing 4.81 kg, were found hidden in their shoes, they added. When produced before a court, they were sent to 14 days in judicial custody.
A truck laden with boulders overturned in West Bengal's Siliguri area on Thursday evening, killing four people and injuring at least three others, police sources said. A fire brigade team, on learning about the accident, rushed to Jaleshwari bazaar in Siliguri and used a crane to move the toppled truck, under which several pedestrians lay trapped, the sources said. Seven people were rescued from the spot and rushed to two local hospitals in critical condition. Two persons were declared "brought dead" at Siliguri District Hospital, while two others succumbed to their injuries at North Bengal Medical College & Hospital, the police sources said. Identities of the deceased and injured were yet to be determined. According to the sources, the truck driver lost control of the vehicle, following which it overturned.
