As a high-powered panel of minister lead by Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari dwells on ways to deal with the mounting crisis in the country's sugar sector, farmers are faced with a peculiar problem.Farmers alleged that despite having almost 20 per cent of sugarcane standing in their fields few mills western parts of Uttar Pradesh have simply stopped issues indents (parchi) or slowed them down considerably forcing them to sell the crop to local jaggery makers at much lower rates. Indents or 'parchi' is a sort of written assurance that sugar mills give to farmers to within their pre-demarcated areas to purchase the sugarcane from them at rate fixed by the state government. For 2018-19 sugarcane marketing season, the state advised price of sugarcane determined by Uttar Pradesh government is Rs 315 per quintal for normal varieties and Rs 325 per quintal for early sown varieties, while local jaggery makers have been purchasing sugarcane at around Rs 150-200 per quintal.
