Mizoram suffered a loss of Rs 336.49 crore due to the outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) in 2024, officials of the state's Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department said. So far, the state has suffered Rs 896.69 crore loss due to the dreaded pig disease since 2021, they said. At least 14,950 pigs have died due to ASF and 24,177 others culled in the hilly state from January to December, 2024 according to the data provided by the department to PTI. The ASF outbreak was first reported at Lungsen village in south Mizoram's Lunglei district near the Bangladesh border on March 21, 2021 and 33,417 pigs died during that year, officials said. Additionally, 12,568 pigs were culled in 2021 as a precaution to prevent the pig disease from spreading further, they said. While 12,795 pigs died and 11,686 others were culled in 2022, last year saw a smaller toll with 1,139 deaths and 980 pigs culled, they said. An outbreak of African swine flu has been reported in Kanichar village in this north Kerala district, following which the district Collector ordered culling of pigs in two farms there. The district animal husbandry official confirmed the flu at a private farm located at Malayampadi on Friday. Subsequently, the district authorities ordered culling of the pigs there and in another nearby farm located in a 10km radius, and bury the carcasses as per protocols. An area of one km around the pig farm, where the infection had been detected, was declared as an infected area and a radius of 10km as a disease surveillance zone, official sources said. Distribution and sale of pork in the area and its transportation to other places have been banned for three months, they said. At least 115 pigs were found infected with African swine fever and 85 of them have died in the last 15 days in Madhya Pradesh's Katni district, an official said on Tuesday. Following the sudden deaths of pigs, samples were sent to a laboratory in Bhopal for testing on October 27, government veterinarian Dr R K Soni said. The reports revealed that the animals had suffered from African swine fever, he said. As many as 85 out of 115 infected pigs have died in the last 15 days, the official said. African swine fever is a highly infectious haemorrhagic viral disease that affects pigs, but is not transmitted from animals to humans. All precautions have been taken and pig farmers have been alerted about the spread of disease, Dr Soni said.
