The government should introduce phase manufacturing program for telecom equipment to boost local ecosystem and enhance value addition in indigenously made products, a senior official of GX Group said. GX Group CEO Paritosh Prajapati told PTI that it's time for the government to give a boost to electronic components as well to enhance value addition in the telecom gears which are a critical element from the national security perspective as well. "To have a complete homegrown ecosystem of telecom and IT equipment, the government should look at a phased manufacturing programme (PMP) for these equipment. "Along with developing domestic manufacturing, PMP will also ensure that there is no hindrance in the overall supply chain resulting in smooth deployment of the digital infrastructure," Prajapati said. GX Group is one of the beneficiaries of the telecom production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. Telecom production in the country crossed Rs 70,000 crore in November. Out of the total ...
Industry body COAI on Friday sought the government's intervention on the issue of rising cases of telecom equipment theft and said telcos are incurring huge losses and expenses in replenishing equipment at affected sites, and even customers are suffering. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), which counts operators like Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea as its members, wrote to telecom secretary Neeraj Mittal, flagging the issue. The association has urged the Department of Telecom (DoT) to write to all State Chief Secretaries to prioritise such complaints and ensure strict action on the same. COAI also urged the DoT to issue orders for the immediate blocking of several foreign websites (including eBay, Alibaba, Telefly, Seeker816, Dorfatrade) that are "selling active equipment" suspected to have been stolen from networks of member telcos. "It is...critical that these websites are blocked immediately," COAI said. COAI requested the DoT to urgently interven
State-run C-DoT is expecting to deploy indigenously developed 5G telecom gears in the BSNL network in the next 6-8 months, a senior company official said. Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) CEO Rajkumar Upadhyay told PTI that the company has indigenously developed the entire 5G network comprising 5G standalone (SA) radio, core and IP Multimedia System in collaboration with startup Wisig and VVDN Technologies. C-DoT demonstrated the test network set-up using its 5G gears in a live video call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the India Mobile Congress 2023. "We have already deployed 4G and 5G non-standalone core in the Punjab circle of BSNL and are being gradually scaled up to pan-India level. "The technology that we demonstrated is 5G SA, which will be deployed in the BSNL network in 6-8 months after testing it thoroughly," Upadhyay told PTI. At present, only Reliance Jio has a 5G SA network in the country, which means its entire network is 5G and does not have a mix of
While Indian telecom operators have completed the roll-out of 5G network across the country, Nokia sees demand for equipment will be substantial in 2024-25, a senior company official said. Speaking to PTI at the India Mobile Congress, Nokia India head of mobile networks business Tarun Chhabra said that the proliferation of fixed wireless access network will usher the Indian telecom sector into the second phase of 5G network deployment. "India's requirement is still going to be substantial in 2024-25, then our factories will be fully loaded with India plus some exports," Chhabra said. Nokia has recorded multi-fold growth in its telecom gear business in India on account of rapid 5G network deployment. In the third quarter financial report, Nokia President and CEO Pekka Lundmark said the business continued to benefit from 5G deployments in India, where net sales more than doubled year-on-year, but sales volume moderated significantly on a sequential basis as the pace of deployment has
Swedish telecom gear maker Ericsson's net sales in India grew over 3.5 times to about Rs 7,400 crore (9.6 billion Swedish Krona) in the third quarter ended September 30, as per its financial report released on Tuesday. Ericsson had recorded 4 per cent of total net sales contribution of 2,721.6 million SEK (about Rs 2,100 crore) from India for the September 2022 quarter. The net sales of Ericsson at the global level during the September 2023 quarter fell by 5 per cent to 64.5 billion SEK due to a sharp decline of business in North America, which was partly offset by sales in South East Asia, Oceania and India. "Networks organic sales in North America were down by 60 per cent YoY (year-on-year) from a record quarter in September 2022 quarter, due to customers' inventory adjustments and a slower deployment pace. The decline in North America was partly offset by growth in India as well as some early 5G markets resuming investments," Ericsson President and CEO Brje Ekholm said. The net
Network infrastructure and 5G technology provider Nokia has signed a new long-term patent license agreement with Apple to replace the current deal between the two companies that is set to expire at the end of 2023. The deal, which enables Apple to use the Finnish company's technology in its products, covers Nokia's inventions in 5G and other technologies. The terms of the agreement announced late Friday remain confidential. Nokia expects to recognize revenue related to the agreement starting January 2024, and the company said the deal is consistent with its long-term outlook disclosed in the first quarter. The agreement reflects the strength of Nokia's patent portfolio, decades-long investments in Rand D, and contributions to cellular standards and other technologies, Nokia Technologies President Jenni Lukander said in a statement. The previous license agreement between Apple and Nokia was announced in May 2017. Nokia said its patent portfolio is built on more than 140 billion eur
