Telecom regulator Trai and the Department of Telecom have jointly disconnected over 1 crore mobile connections to check pesky callers and fraudsters, according to an official statement. The Department of Telecom has blocked 2.27 lakh mobile handsets for their involvement in cybercrime and financial fraud. "Till date, more than 1 crore fraudulent mobile connections have been disconnected with the help of Sancharsaathi. Further, 2.27 lakh mobile handsets have been blocked for involvement in cybercrime /financial frauds," the statement said. To curb the menace of spam calls, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has directed telecom operators to disconnect and blacklist entities, using bulk connections for spam calls, including robocalls and pre-recorded calls. "In the last fortnight, over 3.5 lakh such numbers have been disconnected and 50 entities have been blacklisted. Telecoms operator Swisscom confirmed on Wednesday it's in talks with Vodafone Group toward a possible purchase of its Italian subsidiary for 8 billion euros (USD 8.65 billion). The Swiss company, which is majority owned by the Swiss government, said in a statement it's in advanced exclusive negotiations to buy all of Vodafone Italia and merge it with Swisscom's Italian subsidiary, Fastweb. Swisscom says it expects the purchase, if concluded, would add value and cash flow to the Swiss company and help improve its dividend policy. The Swiss telecoms operator says the deal would bring lower costs and pave the way for synergies, and comply with aims of the Swiss executive branch, the Federal Council.

UN body International Telecom Union has accepted India's inputs on the 6G technology framework, indicating the country's crucial role in the development of next-generation high-speed technology, an official statement said on Thursday. According to the ITU-APT Foundation of India (IAFI), the Indian administration has played a critical role in getting ubiquitous connectivity accepted as a key usage scenario. "India is emerging as a key player in the development of 6G technology. ITU has recently accepted India's contribution towards setting a global framework on 6G. It is Hon'ble PM Modi's clear vision that India must lead the world in 6G," Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said in the statement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said India is moving fast to become a big exporter of telecom technology from being only a user few years ago. Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Area Office and Innovation Centre here, Modi said India is one of countries to have rolled out 5G mobile technology at the fastest pace. He said the services have been expanded to 125 cities within 120 days of the launch of 5G. "Within 6 months of the rollout of 5G technology we are talking about 6G," Modi said.
