Increased renewable generation led carbon dioxide emissions from the power sector, which make up some 40 per cent of China's overall emissions, to fall by 3.6 per cent in May
India has ramped up electricity generation in recent months as a strong economy and an ongoing heatwave boost demand for power
Coal stocks at thermal power plants continue to be more than 45 million tonnes (MT), adequate to meet the requirement for 19 days, amid peak power demand due to heat wave conditions. The country's peak power demand touched an all-time high of 250 GW on Thursday. Coal stocks at thermal power plants continue to be more than 45 MT, which is 30 per cent higher compared to last year, sources said. In the current month average daily depletion at thermal power plants has been only 10,000 tonnes per day. This has been made possible by ensuring smooth and adequate logistic arrangements for the supply of coal, sources explained. The mechanism of sub-Group comprising representatives from ministries of Power, Coal, Railways and power generating companies is playing an effective role in maintaining an efficient supply chain. The stock at the mine pit-head is over 100 MT amounting to sufficient coal to power the sector. The Ministry of Railways has ensured 9 per cent average growth on daily ...
As many as 184 thermal power plants with a total generation capacity of 211 GW have 68 per cent of normative coal stock levels amid rising electricity demand due to soaring temperatures in the country. According to the Central Electricity Authority's (CEA) May 3 daily report, 184 plants, that are monitored by the CEA, have 47.78 million tonnes of coal stocks against the normative level of 70.55 million tonnes. This assumes significance in view of power ministry projections that peak demand will be 260 GW during this summer. The peak power demand was at an all-time high of 243 GW in September 2023. Peak power demand met or the highest supply in a day rose to 224.18 GW in April 2024 as against 215.88 GW in April 2023. The highest supply in a day has already touched 223.84GW on May 3, 2024, which is higher than 221.42 GW recorded in May 2023. The peak power demand met was 219.37GW on May 1 and 222.03GW on May 2 this year. In view of the projected high demand for electricity, the powe
NTPC on Monday said it will start commercial operations of second unit of its North Karanpura Super Thermal Power Project on March 20. NTPC's North Karanpura Super Thermal Power (STPP) project is a coal-based power plant located in the Chatra district of Jharkhand. "Unit 2 (660 MW) of North Karanpura Super Thermal Power Project (3x660 MW) is declared on commercial operation with effect from 00:00 hours of 20.03.2024," NTPC said in an exchange filing. With this, standalone and group commercial capacity of NTPC will become 59,298 MW and 75,418 MW, respectively. NTPC, under the Ministry of Power, is India's largest power generation company.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Saturday lay the foundation stone for the first phase of Talabira thermal power station in Jharsuguda, Odisha estimated at Rs 27,212 crore. Talking to media virtually, NLC India Ltd (NLCIL) Chairman and Managing Director Prasanna Kumar Motupalli said Modi will lay the foundation stone for first phase (2,400 MW) of the project. The CMD further said 800 MW of the Ultra Super Critical Pit Head Thermal Power Project is also planned in the second phase with an investment of over Rs 8,000 crore. Commercial operation is expected in 2028-29. Leveraging on the cost benefits of a pit head project, the coal for the units will be fed from adjacent Talabira II and III operational mines of NLCIL through eco-friendly conveyor system without involving costly road and rail transportation. The project would be able to supply power at one of the cheapest tariffs among all thermal power stations in the country. This project would generate huge employment ...
State-owned Coal India on Monday said its supply of fossil fuel to the country's coal-fired electricity generating units increased by six per cent to 23.5 million tonnes in the first half of October, ahead of the festive season. The supply was increased amid a sudden rise in power demand even as unseasonal rains hit the operations in coal bearing areas of Coal India's arms based in the eastern part of the nation. Chattishgarh-based South Eastern Coalfields Ltd (SECL) also bore the brunt of the inclement weather, it said. Coal supply to thermal power plants stood at 22.2 million tonnes during the same period of the last financial year. "Coal India's (CIL) supplies to thermal power plants of the country shot up close to six per cent to 23.5 million tonnes (MTs) during the first fortnight of October 2023... Comparatively the supplies were 22.2 MTs in the same period of October 2022," the public sector coal producer said in a statement. The overall supply of dry fuel by CIL to the ...
State-owned REC Ltd on Monday announced signing of initial pacts to finance two green hydrogen and a thermal power project in Odisha. REC has signed an MoU with Odisha Power Generation Corporation (OPGC) to finance Rs 9,538 crore for development of two units of a thermal power project in Jharsuguda, Odisha, the company said in a statement. The collaboration will contribute significantly to the state's power generation capacity and energy infrastructure, REC said. Under a partnership with Acme Group, REC will provide a funding of Rs 16,000 crore for a green hydrogen and ammonia facility proposed at Gopalpur in the state. It has also entered into an MoU with Avaada Group, pledging Rs 15,000 crore for a green hydrogen and ammonia facility at Gopalpur, REC said. The total worth of all MoUs is Rs 40,538 crore. The power ministry has mandated all imported coal-based thermal plants to function with full capacity from March 16 to June 15 this year in order to meet the anticipated high demand of electricity. This order (under Section 11 of the Electricity Act) shall remain valid for generation and supply of power from March 16, 2023 to June 15, 2023, stated a notice sent to 15 thermal plants that use imported coal. Last year in May, the ministry had issued similar directions to such power plants to operate and generate power to their full capacity. The 15 imported coal-based power plants include Tata Power's and Adani Power's plants in Mundra in Gujarat; Essar power plant in Salaya; JSW Ratnagiri; Tata Trombay; Udupi Power; Meenakshi Energy; and JSW Torangallu. India's peak power demand is expected to touch 230GW in 2023. In December 2022, Union power secretary Alok Kumar had said that the government will take all possible measures to meet the 230 gigawatt (GW) single-day peak demand expect
