Toyota is developing and making electric vehicles and EV batteries in China, the Japanese automaker said Wednesday, under a new partnership with the Shanghai government. Toyota Motor Corp. also announced it will start producing batteries for EVs, hybrids and plug-ins at a new USD 14 billion facility in North Carolina, with shipping starting for North American models in April. The moves highlight Toyota's aggressive push in electric cars, a sector where some critics have said it's fallen behind rivals like Tesla and BYD at a time when the Chinese EV market is booming and the world's concerns about sustainability are increasingly crucial. Toyota is setting up a company in Jinshan district in southwest Shanghai for that effort, with production of the new Lexus EVs starting in 2027. Toyota Kirloskar Motor on Saturday said its sales increased by 19 per cent year-on-year to 29,371 units in January. The company had dispatched 24,609 units in the same month last year. The company sold 26,178 units in the domestic market and exported 3,193 units last month. The continued momentum underscores the company's sharp focus on customer centricity, enhancing customer access across the country and increased emphasis on innovative value-added solutions, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) said in a statement. "In 2025, our efforts are to further strengthen the company's foothold in India. We will continue to optimise customer centricity through value-added services and seamless after-sales support, all aimed at creating delightful experiences," TKM Vice President Sales-Service-Used Car Business & Profit Enhancement Varinder Wadhwa said. Japanese auto major Toyota will launch electric vehicles in India, as part of its multi-technology approach towards combating carbon emission in the country, which EVs alone cannot tackle, according to top officials of the company's Indian arm. The company feels that under the current circumstances, strong hybrid is the most practical solution supplemented by other technologies, including electric, flex fuel, electrified flex fuel, and plug-in hybrid in India, Toyota Kirloskar Motor & Lexus India, Deputy Managing Director - Sales-Service-Used Car, Tadashi Asazuma told PTI. Toyota Kirloskar Motor on Wednesday reported 29 per cent increase in sales at 29,529 units in December 2024 as compared to 22,867 units in the same month a year ago. The company sold 24,887 units in the domestic market and exported 4,642 units last month, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) said in a statement. The company said it recorded its best-ever calendar year sales in 2024 at 3,26,329 units. This was higher by 40 per cent as compared to 2,33,346 units sold in 2023. "The SUV and MPV segments being key contributors grew at 20 per cent over the same period last year. We are also observing a growing shift of consumer preferences towards vehicles offering sustainability, value proposition of dependability quotient, enhanced safety and better resale value which is boosting our sales," TKM Vice President, Sales-Service-Used Car Business, Sabari Manohar said.
