India's ship recycling industry is expected to grow to 3.8-4.2-million GT (gross tonnage) in 2025, as against an estimated 2.3-2.6-million GT in 2024, according to a report. According to CareEdge, India accounts for 33 per cent of the global gross tonnage dismantled in 2023, second only to Bangladesh, which handled 46 per cent. "India's ship recycling Industry is poised for major growth in CY25 and is expected to witness similar recycling level in CY24 with an estimate of 2.3 to 2.6 million GT, thereafter a jump to over 3.8 to 4.2 million GT in CY25," said Sajani Shah, Assistant Director at CareEdge. The ship recycling industry in India is expected to grow at compound annual growth rate of around 10 per cent in CY26-CY28, she said, adding cooling-off of Baltic Dry Index, stabilisation of heavy melting scrap prices, and increase in obsolete ships in operations, suggest that more ships will enter the recycling market from CY25 onwards. The government will provide one-time financial support for setting up recycling plants for abandoned fishing gear and plastic waste in coastal areas, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said on Saturday. He announced guidelines for "One-Time Financial Support for Establishing Recycling Plants" while taking part in a beach clean-up drive at Juhu in Mumbai. According to a note prepared by the ministry, the focus is on establishing fishing gear/net and marine plastic waste recycling facilities in the 12 Blue Flag-certified beaches -- which meet global environmental, educational, safety standards -- in the country. One-time financial support will be given to set up 25 recycling units -- 13 for nylon fishing gear and 12 for plastic waste -- near Blue Flag beaches, the ministry said. When a toilet is flushed in California, the water can end up in a lot of places: An ice skating rink near Disneyland, ski slopes around Lake Tahoe, farmland in the Central Valley. And coming soon kitchen faucets. California regulators on Tuesday approved new rules to let water agencies recycle wastewater and put it right back into the pipes that carry drinking water to homes, schools and businesses. It's a big step for a state that has struggled for decades to secure reliable sources of drinking water for its more than 39 million residents. And it signals a shift in public opinion on a subject that as recently as two decades ago prompted backlash that scuttled similar projects. Since then, California has been through multiple extreme droughts, including the most recent one that scientists say was the driest three-year period on record and left the state's reservoirs at dangerously low levels. Water is so precious in California. It is important that we use it more than once, said

India can utilise the huge amount of waste generated throughout the country to produce 65 GW of electricity per annum, which can grow to 165 GW by 2030 and 436 GW by 2050, according to experts. India generates 65 million tonnes of waste every year, which is estimated to go up to 165 million tonnes by 2030 and 436 million tonnes by 2050 as per a white paper prepared at a two-day workshop of waste management experts held recently. About 75-80 per cent of the municipal waste gets collected and out of this only 22 to 28 per cent is processed and treated, the document noted. During the workshop, experts from International Climate Change and Sustainability Action Foundation, IIT, ISM Dhanbad, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), and industries came together to discuss the way forward to deal with the issue of mounting waste dumping sites. India has 3,159 active waste dump sites accounting for about 20 per cent of the country's methane emissions, said the white paper which also provi

Further policy instruments like EPR are under discussion stage, which will incentivize recycling in the country," Joint Secretary, Ministry of Mines Upendra C Joshi told PTI.
