After a freezing winter storm shut schools, cut power and cancelled or delayed flights, the South was slowly thawing Sunday as warmer weather melted snow and ice. Crews worked furiously and by Sunday morning power had been restored to parts of North Carolina and South Carolina where tens of thousands of customers lost electricity over the last few days, according to Duke Energy. In Atlanta, around 1,000 flights were cancelled or delayed Saturday. Airport officials said Sunday morning that all roadways and parking lots had been cleared of snow and all runways were operational. An NGO on Saturday claimed that at least 474 homeless people in Delhi have died due to "winter exposure" between November 15, 2024, and January 10, 2025. The claim made by Centre for Holistic Development (CHD), an NGO working for the welfare of homeless, however, has no official confirmation. In a letter addressed to Delhi Chief Secretary Dharmendra and Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) Chief Executive Officer Ravi Dhawan, CHD cited police statistics, indicating that an alarming 80 per cent of "unidentified dead bodies" in the city are believed of homeless individuals. "Between November 15 2024 to January 10, 2025, 474 homeless people died in Delhi due to the 'winter exposure' and unavailability of essential protective measures such as warm clothing, blankets, or adequate shelter," the NGO claimed. Cold weather conditions persisted in Delhi on Monday with parts of the city receiving light rainfall as the maximum temperature settled at 16.9 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Pusa weather station recorded a high of 14.3 degrees Celsius, 4.7 notches below normal, it said. The Safdarjung observatory, Delhi's primary weather station, recorded a maximum temperature of 16.9 degrees Celsius, 2.1 notches above the normal, at 8.30 am, the IMD said. Delhi experienced light showers between 5.30 am and 8.30 am. Najafgarh received 2.5 mm of rainfall, Pitampura 2 mm, Palam 1 mm, and Pusa 0.5 mm, as per IMD data. The minimum temperature stood at 9.6 degrees Celsius, 2.7 notches above the normal, with relative humidity ranging between 75 and 100 per cent during the day, the IMD said. A total of 226 roads, including three national highways, were closed in Himachal Pradesh following snowfall in several districts, officials said on Wednesday. People shivered under piercing cold wave conditions as minimum temperatures dropped by a few notches in Jot, which received 10 cm of snow in the past 24 hours, followed by Khadrala (5 cm), Pooh (2 cm), Sangla (1.2 cm) and Keylong (1 cm). With night-time temperatures dropping, fog continued to envelop the capital, accompanied by cold winds in the morning and evening. The maximum temperature was recorded at 29.6 degrees Celsius, 1.1 notches above normal. The city experienced its second-lowest temperature of the season on Friday, with the minimum recorded at 15.6 degrees Celsius, according to the weather department. Meanwhile, visibility at Safdarjung dropped to 300 metres at 8:30 am, with humidity levels fluctuating between 94 per cent and 79 per cent throughout the day. The weather office has forecast smog and dense fog for Sunday morning and evening, with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to hover around 29 degrees Celsius and 15 degrees Celsius respectively.
