'Fashion' unreal, cat walk not about drugged models

'Fashion' may be drawing large crowd at cinema halls but designers feel Madhur Bhandarkar, known for his 'realistic' films, has "exaggerated" the lifestyle of models and "mutilated" the fledgling Indian design industry.     

While the movie released last week has received good reviews and audience response, its plot centres around the 'big daddies' of the fashion industry exploiting young girls aspiring to make it big in the world of glamour and big money.

It also depicts several designers as gays frequenting the 'rave parties' with models indulging in self-destruction.     

"The angle of the movie is exaggerated and is not relevant. I am in this profession for the past 20 years and I have not seen any exploitation," well-known Delhi designer Rina Dhaka told .
     
"The cat walk on the ramp requires models to stay fit. They need to remain fit to walk on the ramp. If they indulge in drugs, they won't be able to walk," Dhaka said lamenting the way Bhandarkar has depicted the girls on screen. "It is not true. He (Bhandarkar) took a formula and added his imagination," she said.     

Portraying their characters, Priyanka Chopra and Kangana Ranaut are shown paying quite a price to become super-models. Shaunali(Ranaut) meets a dreadful end by drug over-use that could send shivers to any aspiring model.    

"It(movie) is hyped...the industry has been mutilated," Namrata Joshipura said. Joshipura, who sells her accessories and soft clothing line to stores in the US, Japan and Canada, said, " Worldwide, there are fashion designers who are gay.

This is not just restricted to the fashion industry,"     Well-known designer Tarun Tahiliani felt the 'Fashion' would leave an influence on the psyche of the middle class. "They would probably not send their girls (after seeing the movie) for modeling," he said.
