SMARTCANE

This electronic travel aid fits on the top fold of the white cane. It helps detect objects above the knee and hanging obstacles up to a distance of three metres. For safe mobility, it is important that such obstacles are detected before the cane touches them. This also helps avoid socially awkward situations like collision with people or walking into with animals or objects. SmartCane uses an ultrasound beam to detect the objects in its path and generates a response in the form of different vibratory patterns to identify the distance from the object.

To be launched in March 2014 and will be distributed by Saksham. Price not disclosed yet.
