Breaking tradition Breaking tradition While traditional Indian jewellery with its superb designs, symmetry and craftsmanship will always be close to our hearts, a buyer more in sync with a newer, modern India may prefer to break conventions even while retaining an element of that essential "Indianness" to create a unique look. Mirari, a boutique started a year ago by designer and entrepreneur Mira Gulati, has a new collection that does precisely this. |
There are pieces where "sugarloaf" clusters of gemstones (difficult to come by) are paired with unusual pear-shaped diamonds, making the most of these unusual shapes. In other pieces, the designer succeeds in breaking the traditional symmetry of Indian jewellery to create a contemporary look. Finally, in a striking piece (above), the traditional Indian motif of the peacock has been recreated into something chic and wearable. Price: On request, available at Shangri-La, New Delhi

Moissanites, not diamonds
A surprising number of people are now aspiring to buy a moissanite for what it is instead of a legit diamond. The stone, originally from a meteorite, a mineral called silicon carbide not found on Mother Earth but now manufactured chemically in the US, has an uncanny resemblance to the diamond.
But it's not exactly as a diamond substitute that people are looking to buy it "" even in India. Instead, like in the West (it is worn by Beyonce, for instance), moissanite threatens to find its way into our collections. (It certainly is expensive enough). Sparkling Hues, the company, that introduced this to India, has a "Mother's Day" collection on offer. Choose something for mommy "" or for yourself. Price: Rs 3,500 onwards. Available at the flagship store of Sparkling Hues, E-18, South Extension, Part-II, New Delhi.
