My employers allow me to buy a car up to Rs 8 lakh ex-showroom Delhi. I currently drive a 2001 Accent GLS, and while I like it, I'm getting bored. In the last two weeks, I've test-driven the Elantra GLS, Corolla LE, Honda Accord, Octavia as well as the Scorpio and the Qualis. And I'm completely confused. The only cars with any character at all are the Octavia and the Scorpio. Both are great on the highway and lousy when you try parking. |
The Octavia is special in a sense " you have to pay more, learn to drive it, it has everything on the 'wrong' side and is downright uncomfortable (like other German cars). The Scorpio is much easier to drive, but has a legroom problem on row 2 in the 3 row layout. So, what do you suggest?
Jay Bakshi, via email Take the Scorpio instead only if you have a large family to ferry or have an urge to get some mud on your wheels regularly " the 4x4 version should do very nicely, thank you. |

I drive a Palio and would like to buy a bigger car. I drive 50 km daily in Mumbai and am looking for great acceleration, low maintenance and good resale value. I have a great fascination for the (old) Honda City and have heard legends of the 1.5's acceleration. |
I test drove the new car, but it didn't enthuse me. I am also planning to test drive the new Esteem, which is priced at Rs 5.3 lakh. Here's the thing " for the same price, I am getting a very good, 'showroom condition' 2002 Honda City 1.5, with (a genuine) 7,500 km on the odo which has been Honda-serviced. Should I buy the sparingly used City, or a brand-new Esteem?
B Chakma, via email The Honda is the obvious pick here. It may be the used car, but in terms of engineering/design age, it is far, far fresher. Not to mention quicker, faster and safer. It also happens to handle better and has a truly brilliant engine. |
You will also get a car with a better image, greater rear legroom, similar fuel economy and similar ride quality for well, similar money. Value for money? You bet!
