The Accent is a good all-round performer, but in your case, we suggest you give the Ikon Flair 1.3 a try - it has better rear seat comfort and overall ride quality. We can't confidently recommend the Petra because of concerns regarding Fiat, while the Indigo is not as refined as the other cars you have outlined.

I want to replace my three-year old Hyundai Santro with a car with the following attributes: driveability/fun-to-drive, longevity (I'm buying this car for keeps), reliability and rear seat comfort (in case I need to be driven around).

I average 15 km a day within the city, with the occasional highway trip - mileage is not a concern for me. We are a nuclear family, with two small kids, and my wife will drive the car too. I am not in a tearing hurry to buy the car and would not mind waiting for a couple of months if something more interesting is likely to turn up. My budget is Rs 7 lakh.
Tushar Lowalekar, via email We are tempted to recommend the Ford Fusion to you - it is perfect for a family of four, well-built, fun-to-drive. But we are not sure about it being maintenance-free or reliable in the long run, though the signs are encouraging. Why don't you test drive the Fusion in any case?

Also coming up is the Suzuki Swift, which looks quite promising. You can wait for it to be launched too. Amongst the current three-boxers, your best bet is the Honda City - but your budget may need to be stretched a bit to accommodate it.

I have decided to go for the Hyundai Accent, but recently, I read about a new variant of the Accent, to be launched in the third quarter.
So I have not gone ahead with my booking. Can you please let me know the details of the launch? Also, what is the status of the Suzuki Swift? We're also looking at replacing our ageing Maruti.
Archana, via email An all new Accent debuted at the New York Motor Show recently, but it may take time before it comes to our shores. If you have decided on the Accent as your next car, the arrival of a new car a year down the line shouldn't stop you today.
Remember you are buying a car that suits your needs and if the current Accent meets it you should go ahead and buy it. The Swift is a neatly packaged little Suzuki that a lot of people are waiting for. We expect a May 2005 launch for the car. It will be an ideal car to replace your good old Maruti.
