Crackerjack of a hot rod

It is powerful, extravagantly fitted out and drives like a dream. What more could you expect from Mercedes-Benz's sporty E63 AMG

The adage that you should never judge a book by its cover is so apt for the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG. It may look like just another E-Class, but come nearer and you hear the V8 Biturbo engine growl loudly, quite unlike others of the E-ilk. Then I get another inkling of its character. As I reverse my way out of the parking lot, I feel the power stored within the machine. A gentle push on the accelerator and it was straining at the tethers.

Seeing its unadulterated power, I was eager to find out how stable the E63 would be while handling turns. To make this run as safe as possible, we had to head out before daybreak. The street was all mine and I put it at the E63's disposal. When I stepped on the gas, there was no rude power thrust that pushed me back into the seat, which I must say is not only supportive of the spine, but very comfortable too. The acceleration was lightning fast, especially if the E63 is in the Sports or Sports Plus mode. Transmission is helped immeasurably by the flexible seven-speed automatic gear box which adapts to the nature of your driving mood. The gear shift became more precise and responded quicker as you aped Lewis Hamilton living life in the fast lane. The clutch movement and gear change was so smooth that you could barely feel the shift change.

What makes the E63 AMG a total package is its handling capability. The suspensions never felt like they are too spongy to allow free rein to the spirit, so you always felt confident tacking sweeping turns. Mind you this is a big car but never will you feel the body roll kicking in. It was rock solid and refused to twitch. This Stuttgart crackerjack had a perfectly balanced steering wheel that was also crisply responsive.

However, the E63 is not just about its speed DNA. As incredible as this may sound, the luxury elements of this car actually have a practical aspect. The interiors are almost the same as in the regular E, which is a good thing because the comfort and safety levels are par excellence. Mercedes-Benz has kept the interiors youthful and sporty by making the cabin all black with oodles of chrome and some dark wood touches. The AMG signature flat-bottom steering might not look too fancy, but it provides a perfect cushioned grip. The E63 has awesome seats with adjustable support and comfort features - apart from making it cool or warm, there is also a massage button to ensure the entire day's stress and tensions are eased away. The rear seats also need a special mention as they are among the cushiest and most supportive in the segment, especially the back rest.

The E63 is a solidly built and spacious car and no matter how tall you are, you won't whine about the lack of knee space. The rear passengers have their own private monitors where they can lie back and enjoy their favourite sitcom or movies. We loved the chunky gear lever, leather steering wheel cover and the seats that automatically provide side support when the car senses a sharp turn. Even though there are minimal changes on the outside, the car is still distinguished by its aggressive AMG body kit, bumpers, front fascia, a low stance and delicious 18-inch alloy wheels.

In the uber auto class, there is something called a practical muscle car, and the E63 AMG defines it aptly. It is a 5-seater sedan that tackles most of the real-world road challenges like bottom-scraping speed-breakers and unforgiving potholes and ditches. This saloon can outrace many other sports cars, though it lacks the wow presence till the rear AMG badge and double twin-square exhausts reveal themselves.
