David Beckham quits, Eriksson stands down

David Beckham has just announced he is resigning as England football captain.

Soon after landing in England this morning, Beckham said he had decided some time ago to quit as captain - but hoped it would be as a World Cup winner.

Meanwhile, new manager of the England football team Steve McLaren took over from Sven Goran Eriksson following England's quarter-final exit to Portugal yesterday.
