Dhanush's 'Visaranai' will become the first Tamil movie to premiere in the competition segment of the upcoming 72nd Venice International Film Festival.

The yet-to-be released experimental thriller film, based on a novel called Lock-up, is directed by Vetrimaaran of 'Polladhavan' fame.

The novel is a first-hand account of police brutality and oppression and is written by Coimbatore-based autodriver Chandran. Chandran claims in the novel that he and two of his friends were arrested, allegedly tortured for 13 days and then let off. He says the brutality spurred him to write a book about how the poor and helpless have to face police atrocities.

Visaranai is Dhanush’s second film as a producer to get international recognition after 'Kaaka Muttai'.
The film stars Attakathi Dinesh, Anandhi and Aadukalam Murugadoss in leading roles.

"Visaaranai to premier at the 72nd Venice international film festival in Orizzonti competitive category. Proud Wunderbar films. In the 72 years history of Venice film festival Visaaranai is the first Tamil feature to enter in a competitive category," Dhanush posted on Twitter.

While Tamil films have been screened there, this is the first Tamil film to be screened in the competitive category at the Festival.

The 72nd Venice Film Festival is scheduled to run from 2 September to 12 September. Orrizonti in Italian means ‘horizons’ and this section looks into films that would fit in with the new trends in world cinema.
