Colin Trevorrow-directed Jurassic World roared into the record books on Sunday, as it beat the last instalment of the Harry Potter series globally and Marvel’s The Avengers in the US, to register the highest worldwide weekend opening ever, grossing nearly $511 million.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 previously held the record, opening at $483.2 million. Thus, Jurassic World also becomes the first movie to open above the $500-million mark globally. In the US, the fourth instalment of the popular series of dinosaur movies opened to $208.8 million, ahead of the $207.4 million posted by The Avengers in 2012.
According to reports on Deadline.com, the movie’s earnings come as a surprise. In a straw poll that the online entertainment magazine conducted, predictions by three different studio executives put the movie’s earnings at $115 million, $125 million and $135 million.
When it comes to critical reviews, the much hyped Chris Pratt-starrer could only receive a lukewarm reply, with most critics finding the plot repetitive, and the film watchable only for its visual effects.
