Why do people get in their cars and drive off to faraway places? A need to get out and see the countryside? Of course. A sudden awakening of a dormant sense of adventure? No doubt.

A craving to kick back and relax? Sure. We'd like to add another reason " the opportunity to eat lots of different kinds of food. If you're the sort whose heart melts at the very sight of a crisp dosa, you would do well to go to Udupi, a sleepy little town that's justifiably famous for its wonderful vegetarian cuisine.

Mitra Samaj is the place to head to, bang in the middle of town. Dosas, idlis, vadas, bondas, badam halwa, they do them all impossibly well, if there can be such a thing.

Also have a look at the town's lovely temples and old houses, and end the day with a walk on the beach
