The market is, today, flooded with smart phones. These phones, mind you, are “smart”, and are not named so just because they look “smart”, or because they have a few unique features. But even a smart phone becomes truly “smart”, that is, the ultimate device for information, communication and entertainment, only when you actually load the applications created especially for them.

Be it music, news updates or travel guides and restaurant listings, you can find applications for almost everything these days. Apple has, in fact, even launched special Christmas applications. Let’s take a look at some of the best applications (both free and paid) available for the iPhone, BlackBerry and Nokia phones.

Evernote

This application on the iPhone turns your phone into a one-of-its kind digital archive by keeping a track of snapshots, written notes and voice recordings with a simple search option making it easier than ever to find whatever it is that you’re looking for. It’s perfect for people who have poor memory or are just too lazy to remember each detail. The best part is that, Evernote is free to download.

Guitar Hero World Tour

This is one of the best games available across various phones. You can choose between playing either the drums or the guitar, and even against other players in real-time concerts. The idea is to hit the right colour button as each note flies past; harder songs throw notes at you faster and at faster rhythms. You can jam with various songs from artistes such as Nirvana or Metallica. Fun, simple to play and cheap (relatively so!) — you only have to shell out $9.99 to access the World Tour.

Joikuspot Mobile Wi-fi Hotspot

With this application available on the Nokia Ovi store, you can turn your phone into a mobile hotspot without any special software. Priced at $19.99, it’s the simplest and easiest way to connect to the Internet through your phone. Of course, you will have to pay for the surfing, as per your service provider’s payment plans.

Datviz Documents

The Documents to Go application on your smart phone allows you to view and edit Microsoft Office documents like Word, Excel or even PDF files. The full version not only lets you edit but also create documents. It’s available on BlackBerry as well as iPhone and comes with a free 30-day trial period. But to download the application, you will have to fork out about $50.
