Want to holiday on the sea, but not on board a ship, or merely by the beach? The Taj Exotica has just the thing for you, in the Maldives, complete with villas, spa and diving centre, but be prepared to pay.

For $1,000-1,200 for a three-night B&B package, or else a $400-500 room night, you get to stay in villas-on-stilts built over the still waters of a lagoon where everything from the bathtub to the deck opens out on to the privacy of the open sea.

Most of the 64 villas are built, in fan-shaped form and accessed by speedboats, to include an individual pier. And if you can pay extra, some of the beach villas come with their own plunge pools, while the deep blue sea beckons just beyond.

Fine dining, lots of sun and seasports, and the pamperings of yoga, tai-chi, aromatherapy and massage, help create an unforgettable holiday that takes you away from stress, burnout and exhaustion of the world. Civilisation, however, is just a remote away, complete with DVD player, Internet connectivity and international direct dialing, and more.

Heaven, truly, must be a beach. For bookings in paradise, call the Taj Reservation Network, or the Taj hotel closest to you.
