 Considering your car is quite old, it is possible that the distributor's pinion gear that runs off the camshaft could be worn out. This will lead to constantly varying dwell and also pitting of the contact breaker points. Solution? You'll have to replace the complete distributor unit with a fresh unit.

 To ensure further electrical health, go the whole hog and spend a bit of money
