What I've liked
Unmasking Beauty
Let me admit at the outset that this ad might not exactly be a contender for a "Best Of...." competition. But it does cut the clutter on your TV set for the simple reason that it is packaged so beautifully. It's the TV commercial for Lakme Sun Expert Ultra Matte.

It has nothing much to say but the little it says it does so in the most aesthetic, gentle and gracious manner possible, bringing to mind the controlled, graceful movements of one who is high-born.

The very stateliness of the movement in the film is in sharp contrast to the high energy, high decibel spontaneity that has become the hallmark of most content on TV these days "" from advertising to entertainment and even in the news modules. It is also a beautifully colour-co-coordinated film; the masks are pleasing, the clothes equally lovely, and the music a perfect foil for the discreet elegance of the film.

There is no doubt that this is a film for a cosmetic product unlike a few others which, perhaps for credibility reasons, devote a greater portion to the miserable side of life before the product window. And then one quick wipe/splash later, there emerges the reformed beauty for a brief while and the ad is over.

What happens is that with this approach, the 'persistent memory' that remains of the ad is the 'before' aspect. Whereas with the Lakme ad, the 'before' is cleverly hidden behind a few remarkably nice looking masks! So in retrospect, a casual viewer remembers the overall beauty of the ad rather than misery it tries to do away with.

What I've learned
A jack of all trades is a master of none
I met a brilliant creative person the other day "" a television content creator "" whose success, oddly enough, does not hold a candle to his talent. Since it is often the other way around with most creative people I meet in advertising, their talent invariably not standing up to their success, this new encounter left me wondering about this oddity called success.

My television content creator is a brilliant creative person but terrible when it comes to running a business.

Unfortunately, that was his undoing "" he tried to branch off on his own and floundered. Einstein, who though an undisputed genius, apparently invested his Nobel Prize money in the stock market and went broke! Even though my talent does not compare to the above two examples, I too, have no eye for picking the right stocks, nor do I possess a Midas sense of timing "" I tend to sell a stock just before its value shoots up and buy just before it falls!

There you have it. One might be an acknowledged achiever in one field but a terrible loser in another. So if, as the dictionary defines it, you want to achieve success which is the attainment of wealth, position, honours, or the like, then the sure way to do it is to find what you love doing... and stick to it.

This is what divides a 'winner' from the rest. For instance, my creative person should have realised that what he enjoys is the 'process of creation' and not the business of it. If he had stuck to the process, rather than involve himself in the running of the business, he would have attained all the success that he truly deserves.

But because he diverted into a field that he didn't really enjoy, his creative temperament was left to languish at the expense of sundry managerial and administrative issues. In other words, find your passion, make it happen and in the process you will discover that your zeal and fervour will catch people's eye on its own "" remember the old saying, 'A lit lamp can never be hidden'?

The passion you pour into your work will keep the lamp alight and soon enough, you will be indispensable to the world around you which inevitably leads to, as I mentioned before, the 'attainment of wealth, position, honours, or the like'.
