Hyundai unveils the face-lifted Sonata at the Chicago Motor Show. |
The 2007 Sonata went down really well, rather like an unexpectedly good wine from a country you least expected it to come from "" like a Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. |
Now that Hyundai's gotten in the position to be taken seriously in a segment that has Honda (Accord), Toyota (Camry), Nissan and now Chevrolet (Malibu), here's the upgraded new Sonata that will go on sale in the US. |
What Hyundai seems to be aiming for is the little vacant space between the sporty Accord and the in-your-face Camry. That much the looks tell you. Interiors have also seen serious work and even in the pics we've seen, the stuff looks classier. |
Under the hood, the engines have come along as well. The 2400cc inline four is a second-gen Theta job with variable valve timing, four-valve DOHC and variable intake systems that makes 175 bhp. The older four-speed automatic has been replaced with a five-speed job. The top motor, of course, is a V6. The updated 3300cc six "" also debuting the new variable intake system "" now makes 249 bhp and at the cost of very little economy, say Hyundai. |
The V6 only comes with the five-speed auto, while you can row the four with a five-speed manual if you like. Hyundai has not announced street prices at the show, but while the Sonata will probably remain cheaper than the Accord and the Camry, many expect a jump in price over the outgoing model. |
Obviously, Hyundai's usual aces in the hole "" gratuitous trim levels (iPod-ready, even) and in the US, an incredible warranty programme "" will probably hold down their end as usual. Hyundai also say that they've sharpened the response and feel of the double-wishbone job in the front and the multi-link system, for better ride quality and a sharper feel in corners. |
Visually, you can see the new bumpers, lights, wheels and the grille. The 2009 Sonata is expected to receive a five-star crash rating. It features all-wheel disc brakes, ABS, EBD and six airbags. So when do we see it on Indian roads then? Expect the new Sonata to be launched by this festive season. |
