Thus writes Emory University's historian Gyanendra Pandey in this book's "Afterword". This is the principal new addition to this 1990 book. It is also the reason that it deserves a read (or re-read as the case might be).

You may note how Pandey's analysis of "communalism" in the colonial context has been altered by relatively recent events in Indian history, the significance of one or two of which pales in comparison only with Partition itself.
