We bought a Pulsar 180 DTSi in June this year and it is running very fine. Though only my Dad rides it, I have a question about its maintenance. I've a bottle of 'GLOWAX silicone liquid multipurpose polish' and want to know whether the use of a wax polish on the bike can cause loss of colour or colour fade. How often can I use the polish?

There is no problem in using a silicone-based polish on your bike as long as it does not contain an abrasive, paint cutting agent (like rubbing compound). You can polish the bike once in a month and this will maintain paint gloss and prevent fade and dullness.

First, apply the polish with a soft, lint-free rag (old cotton cloth from an undershirt is ideal), and then wait for a few minutes for the polish to dry a bit. Then, using another soft cotton cloth, buff the area of application to a shine.

Work on a small area at a time. Ensure there isn't any dust on the paint which will lead to 'spiderwebbing' scratches. Ensure you work in the shade, away from direct sunlight or excessive heat. Do not apply any polish to tyres, hand grips, levers, pedals, seat or mirrors; that isn't safe.
