The Apparel Exporters Association of Ludhiana (APPEAL) has entered into an understanding with the Punjab Small Industries and Export Corporation Ltd (PSIEC) to set up an apparel park at Dorha in the Ludhiana district of Punjab.

The park will be set up as a joint venture project between the APPEAL and the PSIEC at an estimated cost of Rs 335 crore.

A special purpose vehicle (SPV), Punjab Apparel Park Ltd, has been created to establish the apparel park, which will spread over 100 acres of land.

The proposed apparel park will have 115 industrial plots of different sizes, ranging between 625 square yard and 10,000 square yard. The promoters of the project are expecting an average investment of Rs 2.75 crore per unit in the apparel park.

The park would be set up under the apparel park scheme of the central government, said SC Aggarwal, principal secretary, industries and commerce, Punjab, in Chandigarh today.

The apparel park would be a well-planned, integrated and modern industrial estate equipped with the world class infrastructure facilities like training centre, business centre, offices of buyers and suppliers, apart from efficient social and environmental complaint facilities, Aggarwal said.

According to Aggarwal, the total projected production is expected to be worth around Rs 325 crore. Of the total production, goods worth Rs 275 crore will be exported and the rest is likely to be consumed in the country.

Several studies have been conducted to examine the feasibility of the project, before starting the process of actual setting up of the park.

To monitor the proper implementation of the apparel park project, a state-level committee has been constituted.

"The committee will oversee and report on the progress of the apparel park project to the central government," said Arun Goel, managing director of the PSIEC.

The committee would meet once every quarter to review the progress of the project, Goel said.

The apparel park was expected to generate direct employment to over 22,500 workers, he added.
