JN Tata reads a report by a German geologist about iron ore deposits in Chanda district in the Central Provinces which gives him the idea of a steel plant in India

1901-02
JN Tata meets Charles Page Perin and convinces him to take charge as consultant engineer for the steel plant in India

1907
Geologist CM Weld and Srinivas Rao discover the village of Sakchi at the confluence of the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers and decide this would be the site for the steel plant Tata Iron & Steel Company is floated Tatas issue a Prospectus to raise Rs. 1.5 crore from the market. 8000 Indian investors subscribed within three weeks for a total of Rs. 2.32 crore 1908 Construction of the plant begins at Sakchi

The first cast of pig iron produced on December 2

First steel made on February 16. The Bar Mill commences rolling in October Tata Steel becomes among the first few companies in the world to introduce 8-hour working day for labourers

Ferro Manganese made for the first time in India by Tata Steel

1916-17
Launches Greater Extension Scheme to raise capacity to 450,000 tonnes

1919
Lord Chelmsford visits Sakchi and renames it Jamshedpur and the railway station Tatanagar

1920
Labour welfare initiatives introduced for the first time in India by Tata Steel: leave with pay, workers' provident fund scheme and workmen's accident compensation scheme

1934
Profit sharing bonus started for the first time in India
