FITNESS

Choose a fitness regime that suits you the most.

I t’s that time of the year when you make — or are compelled to make — resolutions, knowing very well their fate. Interestingly, being one the most comfortable conversation-starters in the first week of the year, people tend to mention one far too often: the fitness resolution.

“How different is a new year resolution to lose weight from something we tell ourselves to follow everyday?” asks a 35-year-old artist who has been trying to follow a regular exercise regime most of last year. So what makes us believe that a new year resolution of the sort will work?

Trainers say speculating certainly won’t help matters, but maybe such a decision as a last-ditch effort to get into shape just might. While gyms continue to see a steady rise in membership, there is also the fear that they may not last beyond a few weeks. But yes, if fitness does indeed loom large on your mind, there are a few things that may help you actually stick to the plan.

Are you sure you know what regime you prefer most? You think it’s gymming (maybe because it’s the done thing to do), you guess it’s jogging, or perhaps it’s aerobics? We suggest you try a whole list of options that excite you: dancing, walking, squash, tennis, football, indoor swimming (for this season)... there are options galore. If you can schedule one activity every second day after work, in a few weeks you might be able to draw a conclusion on which one would be easiest to follow. You could also try two or three months of one activity, and then move on to another.

Here is another suggestion from someone who loves to trek — you can see the kilos shedding. Take two weeks off and go for a long trek, and at the end of it you will feel positively trimmer and lighter. Naturally, post the trek you will need regular activity to maintain yourself, but that’s step two, worry about it when you need to.

And here’s another thing, cut down on the number of times a week you eat out. Eating home food can make a difference in terms of the amount of oil you consume and other fattening factors.

For those with mothers who insist on six-grain rotis and lightly cooked greens, start listening!
