Usha Rajagopalan has every reason to be proud. The writer has been at the forefront of a successful effort to save Puttenahalli Lake in Bangalore’s JP Nagar. Like many other lakes in the city, Puttenahalli Lake, too, was suffering from pollution, encroachment and neglect. With the help of a small group of volunteers, however, it was brought back from the brink of extinction. In recognition of the efforts of the Puttenahalli Neighbourhood Lake Improvement Trust, the Bengaluru Bruhat Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) handed maintenance of the lake over to its members, a rare example of such a step being taken. But Rajagopalan is also incensed at the attitude of her fellow citizens. “There is apathy towards projects like these among the general public. People don’t really care,” she says.
