Car sales fell by four per cent in February to 164,000 units, as compared to figures for the same month in 2015, according to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).
Over sales of passenger vehicles went up marginally by 1.68 per cent to 234,154 units. According to Sugato Sen, deputy director general, SIAM, the agitation by Jats in Haryana impacted car sales, especially as Maruti Suzuki, the country’s top carmaker, as its factories in the state.
Maruti Suzuki reported a 3.94 per cent fall in domestic car sales to 87,149 units, while Hyundai Motors saw a 12.7 per cent fall in sales at 32,442 units. Mahindra & Mahindra saw a 26.99 per cent jump in sales at 22,621 units, while Honda Cars saw a 15.61 per decline in sales at 12,713 units. Tata Motors saw a 20.21 per cent fall in sales at 9,284 units.
Two-wheeler sales grew by 12.76 per cent in February to 13.62 lakh units. Motorcycle sales jumped by 11.05 per cent to 8.59 lakh. Hero MotoCorp, the market leader, reported a 10 per cent increase in motorcycle sales at 4.07 lakh, whereas Bajaj Auto saw a hefty 30.47 per cent rise in sales to 1.51 lakh.
