While Volkswagen is reportedly planning to buy back 115,000 of its diesel vehicles involved in a pollution cheating scam in the US, the company has no such plans in India.
According to company sources, the German automaker does not plan to buy back its models in India as none of them (including models of Skoda and Audi) have violated Indian emission norms.
A German newspaper on Thursday claimed that the company planned to buy back 115,000 of the 580,000 vehicles that were impacted by the cheating scam in the US. Volkswagen is facing a legal case for installing 'cheat devices' in its diesel vehicles to bypass emission control norms.
Last month, Volkswagen announced a voluntary recall of all cars with the EA 189 engines in India to "implement technical updates in accordance with the timelines presented to the authorities."
Last September, the German carmaker had to admit that it had installed pollution-cheating software in 11 million diesel engines worldwide. Besides nearly 600,000 cars in the US, it is likely to recall over 8.5 million cars in Europe.
The embattled German auto major was directed by India's National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Wednesday not to install 'cheat devices' in its vehicles. Volkswagen, however, denies it has installed such devices in its cars in India.
