The industry captains in Bangalore are delighted with over the Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s budget announcement of developing an industrial corridor between Bangalore and Mumbai.

The proposed industrial corridor will significantly ease congestion in Bangalore and aid in the rapid development of the industry in northern parts of the state.

“Unlike the Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor, which largely helps Tamil Nadu, the proposed Bangalore-Mumbai Industrial Corridor will lead to large-scale industrial development. We had been asking the state and Central governments for the past three years to take up this project. Our demand has now been considered finally,” T S Sampath Kumar, Secretary General, Bangalore Chamber of Industry and Commerce (BCIC), said.

“From the State perspective we welcome the initiative to implement the Chennai-Bangalore and the Bangalore-Mumbai Industrial Corridors which will give a boost to the industry,” he said.

The industrial policy of Karnataka government also talks about developing Bangalore Mumbai Industrial Corridor and it is proposed to develop six industrial clusters along this corridor. “There is enormous scope for developing automobile and auto components, readymade garments, steel, food processing and textile clusters along the proposed corridor,” Kumar said.

The government of Japan is keen to extend financial assistance to the proposed Chennai-Bangalore corridor project. Big Japanese companies like Toyota are already present in Bangalore and the Chennai area is also attracting a lot of Japanese investments.

The Tamil Nadu government had mooted the corridor project more than two years ago on the model of Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC). Both Tamil Nadu and Karnataka governments have done several surveys involving IL&FS and iDeCK to know the feasibility of the project. The Karnataka government, however, had recommended extension of the project up to Mumbai to get full benefit along the proposed Suvarna Karnataka Industrial Corridor passing through NH-4. Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) has shown interest in this project.

The Karnataka government has acquired close to 4,000 acres land at Mulbagal, Kolar and Hoskote on the proposed Chennai-Bangalore corridor for development of dedicated industrial parks. The government has acquired 1,200 acres in Mulbagal to promote granite industries hub, general engineering parks at Kolar and Hoskote.
