Indians get 290 gms milk in a day, 55 eggs annually

India's milk production increased to 127.9 million tonne in 2011-12 from 53.9 million tonne in 1990-91

India not only ranks first in the world in milk production, its per capita milk availability at 290 grams daily is marginally higher than the global average.

The Economic Survey said that the milk availability increased from 176 grams in 1990-91 to 290 grams in 2011-12 against the global average of 289.31 grams.

India’s milk production increased to 127.9 million tonne in 2011-12 from 53.9 million tonne in 1990-91.

This represents sustained growth in the availability of milk and milk products for the growing population of the country, apart from being an important secondary source of income for rural families.

The other segment that is supplementing the farmer income is poultry. Interestingly, the annual per capita availability of eggs was around 55 in 2011-12.
