'Upgradation is key to powerloom sector'

The powerloom sector has emerged as the largest cloth manufacturer, employment provider and contributes to readymade garments export in a big way.

S P Verma, deputy director (technical) and officer-in-charge, regional office of the textile commissioner, said, "There has been 42 per cent rise in annual turnover in powerloom sector due to modernisation. Modernisation is the key to the powerloom sector survival in the post-quota regime."

For the modernisation of powerloom sector, adequate credit flow from financial institutions must be ensured, said Verma at a seminar recently.

He further said that there is a need to identify the specific market and manufacture according to the need there.

At present, the US, UK, Germany, Bangladesh, France, Italy and Thailand are the major market for powerloom sector.
