For the first time, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) will have 110 students interning aboard.

Of the 249 students who got internship offers, 68% accounted for investment banking followed by 17% for management consulting firms.

The summer internship is considered an indicator of the hiring trends at most of the IIMs during the final placement. Most students manage to get pre-placement offers (PPOs) in companies where they intern. Of the 253 students in IIMB who did their summer internships during 2006-07, about 90 students have been given PPOs by the respective companies.

"Usually over 40% of the students in any batch do not have any work experience. The summer internship programme provides them an opportunity to work in a business environment and to hone their skills for the final placement. In the present batch (2007-08), about 80-100 students are sitting on PPOs based on their performance during the summer internship programme," said Professor Sourav Mukherji, placement chairperson, IIMB.

In 2006-07, 101 students did their internships abroad. Over 100 companies flocked to IIMB campus this year to select candidates. Prominent among those were Lehman Brothers, J P Morgan, Barclays Capital, Goldman Sachs, Boston Consulting Goup, Morgan Stanley, Bain & Co. and McKinsey.
