122 Firms Outdo Their 2000-01 Topline In 9 Mths

As many as 122 companies proved smart to outshine their sales performance of fiscal 2000-01 in the last nine months ended December 2001.

The list includes 19 from the infotech sector, 12 pharmaceutical firms, four from the media sector and three trading companies.

Infosys Technologies, Satyam Computer Services, Moser Bear, Digital Globalsoft, Hero Honda, Dr Reddy's Laboratories, Nicholas Piramal, STC India, Hindustan Inks, Television Eighteen and Padmalaya Telefilms were the majors in the list.

The 122 companies, which have scored more than or equaled last fiscal's sales, were also on top in terms of growth rates.

Together, the 122 firms registered a 54 per cent increase in sales and a 80 per cent jump in net profit during the nine months. This has been against a 30 per cent rise in sales and a 73 per cent increase in net profit, respectively, for fiscal 2000-01.

 

The show is commendable in the backdrop of pressurised topline performance by corporates in the recent past.

However, in terms of net profit, of the 122 companies only 53 managed to outscore last fiscal's performance.

Top on the list was two-wheeler major Hero Honda with a 38.6 per cent rise in sales to Rs 3,210 crore against a sales growth of 41 per cent to Rs 3,1701 crore for fiscal ended March 2001.

Infosys Technologies registered sales of Rs 1,923 crore for April-December 2001 compared with Rs 1,901 crore sales for fiscal 2001. However, net profit stood at Rs 598 crore against Rs 623 crore in fiscal 2001.

Satyam Computer and Digital Globalsoft managed to outperform their sales and net profit figures of last fiscal in the nine months. Sales of Satyam Computer were at Rs 1,220 crore, while net profit touched Rs 316 crore in fiscal 2001. For the nine-month period, sales of the company were at Rs 1,274 crore, while net profit jumped to Rs 375 crore.

Digital Globalsoft notched sales of Rs 238 crore and net profit of Rs 66 crore in the nine months compared with Rs 184 crore sales and a Rs 54 crore net profit in fiscal 2001.

Geometric Software, e-Serve International, Infotech Enterprise, and Eonour Software were the other few which managed to outscore their sales for fiscal 2000-01.

Thirumalia Chemicals, PI Industries, Sabero Organic Gujarat, Bharat Starch and Alchemie Organics were the other few which turned black during April-December 2001 backed by a strong sales growth.
