201 Firms Posted 5-Yr Highs In Net Profit

Fifteen pharma companies in the list of gainers in 2002-03

As many as 201 companies, including banks and financial institutions (FIs) posted a higher net profit in 2002-03 than in the previous five years.

Excluding banks and FIs, the aggregate net profit of the remaining 186 companies jumped 51 per cent to Rs 11,202 crore in 2002-03 as against Rs 7,419 crore in the previous year.

Total sales rose 18 per cent to Rs 1,22,616 crore (Rs 1,03,799 crore), interest outgo declined almost 10 per cent to Rs 5,103 crore (Rs 5,684 crore).

Of the 201 companies, 12 posted a net profit in 2002-03 after making continuous losses in the last four years.

 

These include Amforge Industries, Andhra Petrochemicals, Birla Corp, Gujarat Alkalies, JK Pharmachem, NRC and Vickers Systems.

As many as 15 pharmaceuticals companies were among the firms posting a five-year high in net profit in 2002-03.

Eleven banks recorded their highest net profit in five years, during 2002-03. The passage of the Securitisation Bill in Parliament will help the banking sector improve its bottomline in the current fiscal. An equal number of companies were from the steel sector.

There are eight companies each from the auto ancillary and information technology sectors, seven from non banking financial institutions and vanaspati, six from the diversified group, five each from engineering and forgings, and four from the alkalies sector in the list.

GAIL topped the list of firms posting a five-year high in net profit in 2002-03. Its bottomline during the year was Rs 1,607.01 crore.

It was followed by Infosys Technologies (Rs 957.93 crore), HDFC (Rs 690.29 crore), Bharat Heavy Electricals (Rs 670.53 crore), Hero Honda (Rs 580.76 crore) and Kochi Refineries (Rs 456 crore).
