A K Chanda, the chairman of the Kolkata Port Trust (KPT), today took over charge as the new chairman of Indian Ports Association (IPA).
After a gap of 12 years, a KPT chairman once again became the head of the IPA involving 12 major ports of the country like Mumbai, Kandla, Jawaharlal Nehru and Vizag.
During his tenure as the chairman, the KPT handled 57.282 million tons of traffic in 2007-08 creating an all-time record in cargo-handling in the history of Kolkata Port.
During the last seven years, KPT has increased its cargo volume by more than 88 per cent.
According to a release by the KPT, “Chanda’s ascendancy to the IPA comes at a time when the IPA is witness to an unprecedented turnaround and is on throes of an order-of-magnitude change.”
