Kolkata is likely to get a second airport in three years, as the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has given its in-principle approval for the renovation of the abandoned Behala airfield for civil operations.
"Small aircraft and helicopters can still be operated through the existing infrastructure at Behala. We are planning civil opertaions from Behala airport. Our chairman has already given his in-principle approval for the renovation. The masterplan has been sanctioned by him," said AAI regional executive director (eastern region) Gautam Mukherjee.
According to the plan, the runway would be extended from 3,000 feet to 4,500 feet and a terminal for 50-75 passengers would be built. "The runway needs to be extended and strengthened to make it a full-fledged airport for ATR-72 (an aircraft in which 72 passengers can be accommodated) operations," he said.
"The AAI board has to approve the plan. Then the tender process would start. Even if things run smoothly, it would take about three years to make it operational," he said. The project may cost about Rs 70-75 crore.
The current air-strip at Behala has been lying defunct for years. Locals have cut through the compound and several highrises have sprung up around the airfield. AAI has sought assistance from the West Bengal government to resolve the matter. An inspection team comprising AAI officials and state government representatives is likely to visit the area soon.
The state government wants a helicopter service from Behala to various tourist destinations in the state like Digha, Bolpur and Sundarban. However, according to Mukherjee, the matter has not yet been finalised.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also announced plans for air connectivity to Malda and Balurghat in North Bengal, and Asansol in Bardhaman district. Mukherjee said, “We have small airports in Malda, Balurghat and Asansol. If AAI thinks it is viable to renovate them, only it can invest. We would be sending a survey team to Malda and Balurghat.”
Banerjee had inaugurated a maiden commercial flight between Cooch Behar and Kolkata on July 19. Daily flight services, operated by Northeast Shuttles with an 18-seater Dornier aircraft, are also scheduled to start. The state government would provide subsidy by reserving eight seats per trip.
